Building Your First Skincare Routine: The 4-Product Framework

By Tayler Beckner, Licensed Medical Aesthetician — Southlake Aesthetics

The most common thing I hear from new clients is some version of: "I know I should be doing more for my skin, but I have no idea where to start and everything is overwhelming."

I understand completely. Walk down any skincare aisle or scroll social media for five minutes and you'll be told you need ten products, applied in a specific order, at specific times of day, with warnings about which ones can't be used together.

Here's the truth from someone who does this professionally: four products, used consistently, will outperform twelve products used sporadically. Every single time.

Let me give you the framework.

The four essentials

1. Cleanser

Everything starts here. A cleanser that's wrong for your skin type undermines every product that follows.

The test is simple: your skin should not feel tight after washing. If it does, your cleanser is stripping your barrier, and that leads to irritation, dehydration, and often more oil production as your skin overcompensates.

Match to your skin type:

  • Normal / all types: a gentle gel cleanser
  • Dry: a hydrating cleanser that adds moisture while it cleans
  • Oily or acne-prone: an exfoliating cleanser that clears without over-drying
  • Sensitized or post-treatment: a gel-to-milk emulsion that removes without disruption

Cleanse twice daily — morning and evening. In the evening, if you wore makeup or sunscreen, a double cleanse is worth it.

2. Antioxidant serum (morning)

This is your daytime defense. A well-formulated vitamin C serum protects your skin from the environmental damage that accumulates every day — UV, pollution, and free radicals — while brightening tone over time.

If you only add one "active" product to your routine, make it this one. I've written a full guide on choosing the right vitamin C serum if you want to go deeper.

Apply to clean, completely dry skin in the morning, before moisturizer and sunscreen.

3. Sunscreen (morning, every single day)

I'm going to be direct: sunscreen is the single most effective anti-aging product available, and it is not optional. Not in winter. Not when it's cloudy. Not when you're mostly indoors — UVA passes through window glass.

Everything else in your routine is working to repair damage. Sunscreen prevents it. Prevention wins.

The best sunscreen is the one you'll actually wear every day, so texture matters more than people admit. If you've never found one you like, the problem is the formula, not sunscreen itself — modern professional-grade options are genuinely elegant. Broad spectrum, SPF 30 minimum, reapply if you're outdoors.

4. Moisturizer (evening, and morning if you need it)

Moisturizer seals in everything underneath and supports your skin barrier overnight, when repair is most active.

Match the weight to your skin:

  • Oily / acne-prone: an oil-free hydrating gel
  • Normal / combination: a light lotion
  • Dry / mature: a richer cream with ceramides and fatty acids to replenish what skin loses with age

Your routine, start to finish

Morning: Cleanse → Vitamin C serum → Moisturizer (if needed) → Sunscreen

Evening: Cleanse → Moisturizer

That's it. Four products, two routines, maybe three minutes each.

What to add next — and when

Once those four are habit (give it 6-8 weeks), you can layer in targeted treatment. In the order I usually recommend:

Fifth product: exfoliation. Two to three times a week, either a physical polish or a chemical/enzymatic exfoliant. This is what takes your skin from "healthy" to "glowing." It also helps everything else absorb better.

Sixth product: a targeted corrective. This depends on your primary concern:

  • Fine lines and texture → a retinol or growth factor serum, applied at night
  • Acne and oil → a treatment pad or salicylic-based serum
  • Dark spots and uneven tone → a brightening treatment
  • Eye area concerns → a dedicated eye treatment

A note on adding actives: introduce one new product at a time and give it two weeks. If you add three things at once and your skin reacts, you have no idea which one caused it.

The two mistakes I see most often

Mistake one: switching products too quickly. Most corrective products need 8-12 weeks of consistent use before you see meaningful results. People try something for three weeks, decide it isn't working, and move on — right before it would have started working. Consistency beats novelty.

Mistake two: too much, too fast. Using three exfoliants and a retinol simultaneously doesn't accelerate results — it compromises your barrier, which sets you back weeks. More actives is not better. The right actives, used consistently, is better.

Where to start

If you're not sure which specific products fit your skin, book a free online consultation. I'll look at your skin, ask about your concerns and what you've tried, and give you an honest recommendation — including telling you if something you already own is working fine.

I'd much rather help you build a routine you'll actually keep than sell you products that end up in a drawer.
